Do we ever grow out of our love for fairy tales? This question lies at the heart of Oscar winner Michel Hazanavicius’ The Lost Prince. Director Hazanavicius turns his attention towards the magic of cinema itself in his latest flick, which is a similar vein running through his past films such as Redoubtable (AF FFF18) and, of course, The Artist (2011), the latter winning five Academy Awards including Best Film and Best Director.

The Lost Prince follows single father Djibi (Omar Sy, AF FFF18, Two Is a Family; AF FFF17, Monsieur Chocolat; and appearing in The Wolf’s Call also at this year’s Festival) and his young daughter Sofia. Every night, they escape into ‘Storyland’, an imaginary movie studio where Djibi builds elaborate tales of dragons and knights to enthral his daughter, starring himself as the heroic Prince. As Sofia matures, her own stories and adventures see her father play a less central role. Will Sofia’s growing up render him lost forever?

The Lost Prince proves how learning and growing is an ongoing process, offering so much joy, love, humour and compassion to bring out the child inside us all.
